A South African Study Visa Lasts Exactly As Long As Your Course
Most study visa guidance tells you how to get one. Very little of it tells you what the visa is actually attached to — and in South Africa the answer is unusually tight.
Your visa is not issued for a number of years. It is issued for your course, and it is wired directly to your registration at the institution.
The visa is issued for the duration of the course
The regulation is direct about it. For studies at a learning institution other than a school, visas:
shall be issued for the duration of the course for which the applicant has registered
Not a standard term, not a fixed three years. If you register for a four-year degree, that is the period. If you register for a one-year honours, that is the period.
School pupils work differently and are capped: a study visa for primary school may not exceed eight years, and for secondary school six years.
The practical consequence is that changing the shape of your studies — extending, switching to a longer programme, adding a year — is a visa event, not just an academic one.
Your institution is legally required to report you
This is the part students rarely realise they have agreed to. The application requires an undertaking from the Registrar or Principal, and that undertaking has four separate deadlines running against you:

Read that as a system rather than a list. The department does not need to discover a lapsed student — the institution is obliged to tell it, on a clock.
The visa lapses automatically
Here is why those deadlines matter so much.
The regulation says a study visa shall automatically lapse if the holder fails to register with, or is de-registered from, the learning institution at any time during the period for which it was issued — or if the institution's undertakings are not met.
Automatically. There is no notice period in the provision, no decision to appeal, and no grace window written into it. Deregistration and the loss of status are the same event.
That reframes several ordinary student decisions:
- Dropping below full registration is not only an academic question.
- Taking a year out ends the visa, rather than pausing it.
- Failing to register on time at the start of a year triggers a 7-day report.
- A fee block that prevents registration has immigration consequences, which is a strong argument for keeping the fee account clear even in a disputed year.
If your registration is ever at risk, treat it as an immigration matter immediately, not after the academic appeal.
Your spouse and children can come with you
They can — and the basis is worth knowing precisely, because it is narrower than it first appears.
A visitor's visa may be issued to accompany the holder of a study visa, provided the person is the spouse or child of the holder. That is the route, and it is limited to those two relationships.
Now the asymmetry that catches families out.
The regulations allow a change of status inside South Africa only in narrow exceptional circumstances. One of those covers an accompanying spouse or child of a business or work visa holder who wants to apply for a study or work visa.
A study visa holder's family is not in that list. So a spouse who arrives to accompany you and later wants to study or work here does not have the in-country route that a work visa holder's spouse has. The regulation simply does not extend it to them — which means planning for an application from outside the country instead.
If a partner intends to work or study in South Africa in their own right, that should be designed at the outset rather than assumed to be convertible later.
Twenty hours a week — and no vacation exception in the text
Holders studying at a higher education institution or an FET college may work part-time not exceeding 20 hours per week.
On the common follow-up question — whether that cap relaxes over vacations — we are going to be precise rather than helpful-sounding: the provision contains no vacation exception. It states a weekly cap and says nothing about term dates.
That is an observation about what the text does not contain, not a ruling that holidays are covered. Some countries write an explicit vacation uplift into their rules; this provision does not. If a vacation job matters to your budget, confirm it with Home Affairs rather than reasoning from another country's system.
Renewals: sixty days, and the number people miss
Extensions and changes of status must be applied for no less than 60 days before your visa expires. Where a visa was issued for under 30 days, the deadline is 7 working days before expiry.
Sixty days is longer than most students expect, and it falls awkwardly — for a visa expiring at the end of an academic year, the application window opens around exams.
Put the date in a calendar at registration, every year.
The other conditions worth planning around
Medical cover, annually renewed, with a South African scheme. The requirement is cover with a scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act, renewed annually for the period of study. Foreign travel or student insurance from home does not meet that description. We covered why in the money rules for foreign students.
Police clearance is required for a study visa application.
Under-18 applicants need an unabridged birth certificate, the physical address and contact number of the adult acting as guardian in South Africa with a confirmatory letter from that guardian, and consent from both parents — or from the parent holding a court order granting parental responsibilities.
Government-sponsored students whose home state accepts responsibility under a bilateral agreement need a written undertaking from that state to pay for the applicant's departure. Sponsorship, in the regulation's eyes, includes getting you home.

What this page still does not answer
Post-study work rights. We have not sourced how, or whether, a graduate moves from a study visa to a work visa, and we are not going to sketch it. It is the question most worth asking a registered immigration practitioner before you choose a country, let alone a course.
Tuition, and the international levy that South African public universities are widely said to charge, remain unsourced here and therefore unmentioned.
