Proof of Funds for a South African Visa: What the Bank Statement Must Show

☆ Save

Most visa refusals over money are not about having too little. They are about the proof being the wrong shape.

South Africa's Immigration Regulations are unusually specific about what your financial proof must look like and, for the most common category, completely silent about how much it must show. That combination catches people out, so this page sets out the form the regulations actually demand.

The rule that decides most applications

For a visitor's visa, the regulation reads:

The proof of sufficient available financial resources ... shall be in the form of a recently bank certified statement , for the last three months.

Three things follow from that single sentence.

A bank-certified statement, not a printout. The document has to come from the bank in a form the bank stands behind. A PDF you downloaded from internet banking, or a screenshot of an app balance, is not what is described.

Three months, not a snapshot. A single closing balance does not satisfy it. The regulation asks for a period, which means the pattern is visible — money arriving suddenly the week before you apply looks exactly like what it is.

"Recently." The statement itself must be current. The relative's visa regulation puts a number on the same idea, requiring a certified bank statement "not older than three months at the time of application", and that is a sensible yardstick to work to generally.

The is not ours. It appears in the consolidated text of the regulations, where the publisher is flagging the original wording's grammar. The provision that decides whether visitors can afford their own trip is, in its official consolidated form, a sentence someone had to mark as printed.

There is no rand figure for a visitor

This is the question everyone actually types into a search box, and the honest answer is that the regulation does not answer it.

For visitors, the law prescribes the form of the proof and leaves the sufficiency to the official assessing it. The same is true of the study visa, which asks for "proof of sufficient financial means available to the learner whilst resident in the Republic" and names no amount.

Only a couple of categories carry a published figure, and we set out which in what money South Africa asks you to prove, by visa type.

There is also an explicit discretion hook: the regulations allow the individual terms and conditions attached to a visa to include "the submission of proof of sufficient financial means". Sufficiency is a judgement, so make the three-month picture support the trip you have actually described.

The return ticket is a separate requirement

A frequent and expensive misreading. Money in the account does not stand in for a ticket.

A visitor's visa application must be accompanied by "a valid return air flight ticket or proof of reservation thereof" — that is its own paragraph, listed alongside the financial proof. For a port of entry or transit visa, the requirement is "proof of a valid return or onward ticket or purchase thereof".

The medical treatment category asks for "valid return air flight tickets, where applicable", which is the same idea with a qualifier.

Costs the regulations create that nobody budgets for

Sworn translation, at your expense. Supporting documents must be originals or copies authenticated by the issuing authority of the country of origin, and where applicable translated into an official South African language and certified by a sworn translator "at the expense of the applicant." For an applicant from Germany, France or the Netherlands, that is a real invoice, and it arrives before any visa fee.

Appearing in person. Applications must be submitted in person at a South African mission in the country where the applicant is ordinarily resident or holds citizenship. If the nearest mission is in another city, that is travel and possibly accommodation.

A police clearance certificate once you pass three months. A visitor's visa for three months or less does not require one. A visitor's visa exceeding three months does. It is also required for study, business, treaty, relative's and work applications.

The deposit question, answered as far as the regulations go

Home Affairs' own visa guidance mentions that a cash deposit equivalent to the value of an air ticket may be requested in some categories.

We read all nine visa categories in the regulations — visitor's, port of entry and transit, study, treaty, business, crew, medical treatment, relative's and work. No repatriation deposit is prescribed in any of them.

What the regulations use instead is an undertaking by somebody else:

Category Who carries the deportation cost
Work (all three types) The employer, by written undertaking, for the applicant and dependants
Treaty The sending or receiving organ of state
Crew The owner of the conveyance

A 2014 Government Gazette dealt with the forfeiture of deposits paid before the Immigration Amendment Act, 2011 came into operation on 26 May 2014, which points to the requirement having been dropped at that point.

We have not re-read the Act itself, only the regulations, so we are not telling you that a deposit can never be asked for. We are telling you it is not prescribed in the regulation for your category — which makes it a fair thing to query with the mission rather than simply pay.

Category-specific money rules worth knowing before you apply

Study visa — three traps in one regulation. Medical cover must be with a scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act and renewed annually, which foreign travel insurance does not satisfy. Part-time work is capped at 20 hours per week. And the visa lapses automatically if the holder fails to register or is de-registered — the money question becomes moot the moment enrolment does.

Relative's visa — an exemption most summaries miss. The monthly financial assurance is set per person, but the regulation adds a proviso: it is not required where the South African citizen or permanent resident is a dependant child.

Medical treatment — the indirect costs are in the regulation. Beyond the treatment itself, the application needs proof of means "for the costs indirectly related to the treatment", plus proof of means for the medical costs wherever a scheme or employer is not liable. The letter from the practitioner must state the estimated costs and whether the ailment is treatable or curable. Six months maximum at a time.

Business visa — the amount is not in the regulation either. It is the cash or capital contribution "determined from time to time by the Minister ... by notice in the Gazette", certified by a chartered, professional or business accountant, and it comes with a 60% South African staffing undertaking. If you are heading this way, our page on registering a company in South Africa as a foreigner covers what happens after the visa.

Two timing rules that cost people their status

Changing your visa from inside South Africa is mostly not allowed. A holder of a visitor's or medical treatment visa may not apply for a change of status while in the Republic, except in narrow exceptional circumstances — emergency life-saving treatment running beyond three months, or an accompanying spouse or child of a business or work visa holder applying for a study or work visa. Arriving as a tourist and converting is not a plan.

Sixty days, not the last week. Applications for a change of status or conditions, and applications for an extension, must be submitted no less than 60 days before the visa expires. Where the visa was issued for under 30 days, the deadline is 7 working days before expiry.

The order to do this in

  1. Establish which category you are in before touching a bank statement.
  2. Ask the mission whether your category carries a Ministerial amount, since the figures live in Gazette notices, not in the regulation.
  3. Start the three-month statement clock now. This is the one requirement you cannot fix in the week before you apply.
  4. Book the refundable ticket or reservation — separate from the funds.
  5. Get translations and police clearances moving early; both depend on third parties.
  6. Diarise 60 days before expiry, permanently.

About the source

Everything above comes from the Immigration Regulations, 2014 (published under GN R413), consolidated to GN R1328 of 29 November 2018, as published by the Department of Home Affairs. Regulations 9 to 18 were read in full.

Monetary amounts in several categories are set by the Minister by notice in the Gazette and change without the regulation changing. This page is not immigration advice — confirm with Home Affairs or an immigration practitioner.

How does this affect YOUR Money OS?

A visa application is the one time a stranger grades your bank statement. Three months of legible, boring, self-explanatory account activity is worth more than a large balance that appeared last week.

FAQ

How much money do I need in my account for a South African visitor's visa? The regulations set no amount. They prescribe the form — a bank-certified statement for the last three months — and leave sufficiency to the official assessing the application against the trip you have described.

Can I use an internet banking printout as proof of funds? The regulation asks for a bank-certified statement, so a self-printed statement or an app screenshot is not what is described. Ask your bank for a certified statement covering three months.

How recent must the bank statement be? The visitor's regulation says "recently". The relative's visa regulation sets an explicit limit of not older than three months at the time of application, which is a reasonable yardstick generally.

Do I need a return ticket as well as proof of funds? Yes. They are separate requirements. A visitor's visa needs a valid return air flight ticket or proof of reservation; a port of entry or transit visa needs proof of a valid return or onward ticket or purchase thereof.

Does South Africa require a repatriation deposit? No deposit is prescribed in any of the nine visa categories in the 2014 Regulations. Deportation costs are instead covered by an undertaking from the employer, a sending organ of state or a conveyance owner. Home Affairs' guidance still mentions a possible deposit in some categories, so query it with the mission.

Do I need a police clearance certificate for a visitor's visa? Only if the visa exceeds three months. Three months or less does not require one.

Can I convert a tourist visa into a work or study visa inside South Africa? Generally no. A holder of a visitor's or medical treatment visa may not apply for a change of status while in the Republic, outside narrow exceptional circumstances set out in the regulations.

How many hours can a student work on a South African study visa? Part-time work is capped at 20 hours per week for holders studying at a higher education or FET institution.
