About The SPAR Group

The SPAR Group is a South African-based grocery and retail wholesaler operating on a voluntary-trading (franchise-style) model, distributing to independently owned SPAR supermarkets, plus its liquor (TOPS), building-materials (Build it) and pharmacy formats. It also owns retail operations in Ireland, Switzerland and, historically, other European markets. Listed on the JSE, SPAR earns wholesale distribution margins by supplying its network of independent retailers rather than owning most stores directly. Its performance tracks grocery volumes, the health of its independent retailers and its international operations, and the group has been refocusing on its core southern African and selected European businesses.
