Key details
- Waiting periods: no waiting period on accidental injury cover; 60 days for illness cover (Core/Standard/Executive); 30 days for the Vet Visits benefit (Standard/Executive) and for behavioural cover (Executive); 12 months for hereditary/congenital conditions.
- What's covered: accidental injury (all plans), illness (Core/Standard/Executive), vet visits (Standard/Executive), up to 3 months of chronic medication, diagnostics, and rehabilitation (physiotherapy/hydrotherapy). Executive also includes "Pet-Act-OUT" cover for puppy socialisation classes and corrective behavioural treatment, capped at R1,200/year.
- Switching from another insurer: if your pet was continuously insured with any pet insurer for the 12 months before joining OUTsurance, they'll consider reducing or waiving waiting periods with proof of prior cover and a claims-experience letter.
- OUTbonus: if you make no claims for 3 consecutive years, you get 10% of your paid pet-insurance premiums back in cash, with a further 10% after each subsequent claim-free period (every 2 years, then annually). OUTsurance says it was the first SA pet insurer to build a no-claims bonus into its standard product.
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded — defined as any condition your pet showed symptoms of, was diagnosed with, or was treated for before your policy started or during the waiting period.
Is it worth it?
The OUTbonus is a genuinely distinctive feature if your pet stays healthy — a real cash rebate rather than just lower future premiums. Since OUTsurance doesn't publish a starting price, get a quote and compare it against the cover limits above, and read our guide on pre-existing conditions before switching from an existing policy.
